During a recent call with a mom, Family Support Specialist Lea Attarian noticed that the parent sounded upset, even though the interpreter’s translation did not fully reflect that emotion. Wanting to ensure the family was supported, Lea reached out to her colleague, Angela Vazquez, whose first language is Spanish, to help clarify the parent’s concerns.
Angela connected with the parent and learned that she was experiencing significant stress related to unsafe conditions at home. With this better understanding, Lea and Angela coordinated next steps to help the parent access resources and discuss available options. Angela kept in contact by phone to offer support and guidance, while Lea arranged transportation and met the family at their location to assist with transitioning to a safer environment. They also kept their supervisor updated so that the family’s needs could be addressed smoothly.
With this support, the mom and her two young children were able to relocate to a safe setting and connect with an IPV counselor and community case worker. Lea provided emergency items until the family could access additional resources through the safe house.
Lea continues to work with the parent on longer-term goals, including exploring permanent housing, enrolling the 2-year-old in childcare, connecting with English classes, and preparing for future employment opportunities.
This situation highlights how attentive listening, collaboration, and consistent follow-through help strengthen the support provided to Delaware’s children and families.
