Let us face the truth! Grandparents love their grandchild — probably just as much as you do. They love their little toes and fingers. They love their smiles. A relationship between a grandparent and a grandchild is special. They will do anything to keep the little one safe. That is why it is important for you to share the rules of safe sleep with grandparents.

A lot has changed since you were a baby. That includes how and where you put your baby to sleep. Grandparents might believe blankets, baby bumpers, and tiny stuff giraffes are OK to place with your baby during naptime. Grandparents might believe that cuddling in the same bed will make the baby feel safe and comfortable. They did it for you and you turned out just fine.

However, the number of infants that have died by SIDS has increased overtime.  SIDS is the sudden, unexpected death of a baby. While there is no cure for SIDS, there are ways to reduce the risk of putting your baby in danger. Doing things like placing your baby on their back, on a firm and flat sleep surface, in a smoke-free environment have reduced the risk of SIDS.

It is easy to help your baby sleep safe. It can save your baby’s life. Prepare yourself and your family. Share the rules of safe sleep with grandparents and ANYONE that watches your baby.
