In each issue of the Thrive Quarterly Newsletter, we’ll highlight one of the 10 domains from the National Family Support Competency Framework. This issue features Domain 1: Infant and Early Childhood Development, which focuses on supporting the physical, cognitive, and social-emotional growth of young children — one of the most vital aspects of home visiting work.

Family Support Professionals must understand typical and atypical development and how it’s shaped by a child’s environment, culture, and family system. This includes:

  • Understanding Developmental Milestones: Keep up to date with how children grow and change from birth through age 5.
  • Observing Behavior in Context: Watch how a child behaves across settings to determine strengths and potential concerns.
  • Recognizing Family Influence: Reflect on how parenting styles, relationships, and culture affect a child’s development.
  • Screening and Assessment: Learn about tools to monitor development and connect families with resources when needed.
  • Promoting Strong Attachments: Support safe, nurturing relationships between caregivers and children.
  • Partnering with Families: Help families feel confident as their child’s first and most important teacher.
