Safe Sleep: Breastfeeding

Breast milk is nature’s perfect food. Breastfeeding for at least the first 6 months is best for you and your baby. Breastfeeding should be done when and where it is comfortable for you and your baby, but it is important to remain awake.

Save SleepBreast milk contains vitamins, nutrients and disease-fighting substances that protect your baby against various childhood illnesses. Babies who are breastfed have lower incidences of stomach viruses, respiratory problems, ear infections and other diseases. And moms who breastfeed reduce their risk of contracting breast cancer. Recent studies have found that breastfeeding also reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by as much as 50%.

To further ensure safe sleep, put your baby back in his crib, pack n play or bassinet after you breastfeed at night. As tempting as it might be to fall back to sleep with your baby in your bed, it’s much safer to place him back in his own safe sleeping space.

Breastfeeding creates an intimate and healthy bond between mother and child while making safe sleep even more worry-free.
